04/09/2010 - Hot Springs, AR (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Undefeated champion Zenyatta successfully extended her career winning streak to a record-tying 16 races by capturing Friday's $500,000 Apple Blossom Invitational at Oaklawn Park. The champion mare equaled the record held by Citation and Cigar.
Owned by Jerry and Ann Moss, Zenyatta put on one of her classic late-running performances in capturing the Apple Blossom for the second time. Her jockey Mike Smith notched his sixth win in the race and the fifth in the last nine editions.
The six-year-old mare, sent off as the prohibitive 1-20 favorite, but trailed her four rivals through the early going. Be Fair set the pace with Taptam to her outside. War Echo and Just Jenda were a couple lengths back of the top two.
Zenyatta began to cut into the gap as the field entered the far turn and continued to gain on the leaders around the turn for home. She took the lead coming off the final turn and extended her advantage down the stretch.
The two-time champion mare hit the wire 4 1/4-lengths in front of runner-up Taptam, followed by Be Fair, Just Jenda and War Echo.
The time for the 1 1/8-mile race was 1:50.71 on a fast dirt track. The Apple Blossom was previously run at 1 1/16-miles.
"She deserves (all the attention)," Jerry Moss said. "She's a real star and she's developed into her role. She is a real personality and she's not afraid to show it. And she's a great star because she acts a lot better than some that I've dealt with. She's not looking to rewrite her deal or put outrageous things in her contract.
"This is a fantastic place (Oaklawn) right in the heart of America. It's a great racetrack and a great area and it's had great horses that have been here."
Zenyatta returned $2.10 and $2.10, and Taptam paid $6.40. There was no show betting.
Zenyatta remains perfect in her career and adds $300,000 to her lifetime earnings which now stands at $5.9 million
Trained by John Shirreffs, Zenyatta was coming off a win in last month's $250,000 Santa Margarita at Santa Anita. The mare won the Apple Blossom two years ago in her only other start outside of California.
Mike Smith was aboard the horse for the 2008 Apple Blossom and also won the event with Azeri in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and in 1994 with Nine Keys.
The last two years Zenyatta has been voted champion older female and for 2009 finished second for Horse of the Year to Rachel Alexandra. She won the 2008 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic and last year became the first female to capture the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Officials at Oaklawn Park announced in February that the Apple Blossom would have a purse of $5 million if both Zenyatta and 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra start the race. However, after Rachel Alexandra finished second in her debut last month in the New Orleans Ladies her connections decided against facing Zenyatta this early in the year.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship. Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92. After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points. Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1. Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years. With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed. UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern. Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier. OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak. Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta. But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
