04/09/2010 - Augusta, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Less than one year ago, Tom Watson nearly shocked the best players in the world by winning the British Open.
He missed a par putt on the 72nd hole that would have given him the title, then was out-played by Stewart Cink in the playoff. Watson, a five-time British Open champion, took second place for his second runner-up finish at the Open Championship.
The remainder of the 2009 season, Watson finished outside the top eight just once in seven starts. Though he didn't win an event, he did finish second in the season's final major on the Champions Tour.
Watson has gotten off to a quick start this season on the elder circuit with a victory and three top-eight finishes.
The 60-year-old made another splash on Thursday when he posted a five-under 67 to share second place after the opening round of The Masters. That was his lowest round at Augusta since 1997.
Watson, a two-time Masters champion, was over-shadowed by the return of Tiger Woods, but nevertheless had an outstanding round that left him one behind first-round leader, and fellow Champions Tour member, Fred Couples.
The magic dissipated a little on Friday as he mixed six bogeys and four birdies in a round of two-over 74. Watson is still in the top 10 at the halfway point.
"I made some mistakes today. That hurt," admitted Watson, who made the cut for the first time since 2002, when he tied for 40th.
What makes his play this week all the more spectacular, is that Watson had made the cut at The Masters just twice since 1996. Prior to that, he played the weekend every year from 1975 to 1995.
"I don't have any thoughts of that at all," said Watson brushing off a question about his going away after shooting 74. "I have thoughts of playing my butt off and not making the same mistakes as I did today, the same attitude today I had 37 years ago when I first played here."
To make the week more special, Watson has had his son, Michael, caddying for him.
"I wanted him to carry the bag here to see what it was like to be in a major championship inside the ropes," the elder Watson said of his son. "He's been to a few of them outside the ropes, but never inside the ropes. It's a little bit different."
If caddying for his father wasn't enough to make this a truly special week for Michael, he also proposed to his girlfriend, now fiance, during a practice round last Sunday.
Making the cut at the 74th Masters was icing on the cake to an already special week for Tom Watson.
